JACK THIBAULT is a Boston P.I. with French-Canadian roots, and a hockey player brother, who's appeared in a few short stories in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.
Jack first appeared in "Inside Straight" in the October 1991 issue of AHMM as JACK TRIBAULT, with an r, almost certainly a spelling mistake, which was rectified years later when he returned in the June 1998 issue in an entertaining short story story called "Kick The Can," wherein he takes pain to point out his last name is Thibault, with an "h." In it, he's hired to baby sit a student at a private school involved in a nasty custody battle. Adding to the fun is a tip of the hat to Robert B. Parker's SPENSER.
Author Gates previously wrote another P.I. short story, starring another Boston P.I., BUDDY MARGOLIES,which also featured a nod to Spenser , as well as to George Higgins' Jerry Kennedy.
