Minneapolis gumshoe NATHAN PHILLIPS grew up in Minnesota and attended the State University, but he didn't exactly set the world on fire. Eventually, after a series of odd jobs, he was hired as an assistant to private investigator ROY HARTLEY, a friend of Nate's dad. When Roy later died in an auto accident (which later turned out, in 1986's Open Season, to be no accident), Nate inherited the business at the ripe old age of 32. Nate's a low key guy. Has a few beers with his friends. Favors jeans and maybe a sportscoat. Has a cat called Marlowe.
Evidently, there's a whole slew of short stories featuring Nate and Roy, but I've only been able to dig up one. The novels feature only Nate.
