WILL PRIOR, a disillusioned, burnt-out military police officer for the British Army, is struggling to make a go of it, running a rubber plantation in German New Guinea in 1906. A displaced Yorkshireman gone native -- or at least trying to -- he's recruited to investigate a murder at a German nudist colony on a remote island.
That's the essence of The Sun is God (2014), a surprisingly rip-snorting read, reminiscent at different times of everyone from Raymond Chandler and Ed McBain to Graham Green, Philip Kerr and Joseph Conrad, by Irish writer McKinty, best known for his Sean Duffy novels and the Troubles trilogy.
