Rock Banyon

Created by Eric Jonrosh (Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele)

"Most of you are idiots anyway."

-- author Eric Jonrosh endears himself to his audience

ROCK BANYON is a 1950s hard-luck jazz pianist-turned-private eye in The Spoils Before Dying, a 2015 spoof of the P.I. genre (and really bad television); a sort of story-within-a-story, which follows the efforts of pompous but fictional author-filmmaker, Eric Jonrosh (played by Will Ferrell) to bring his classic novel, The Spoils Before Dying, to the screen.

As spoofs go, it seems to have covered most of the bases. It kicks off with Rock (played by Michael Kenneth Williams of The Wire) coming out of a blackout to find he's wanted for the murder of his former lover Fresno Foxglove (gotta love those monickers!) and scientist Wilber Stygamian, and before it's over we'll have crooked Mexican officials, washed up night club singers, dead sax players, closeted homosexuals, booze, pills, thugs, hidden rooms, fevered hallucinations, a heart-felt discussion with a cat about the viability of recording a jazz album with strings, shootouts, Nazi treasures and a surprise meeting with J. Edgar Hoover.

The show was a sort-of sequel to the previous year's The Spoils of Babylon, but the only character that both shows really share is Eric Jonrosh, who introduces each episode but isn't in the actual stories. All you need to know, according to one helpful commenter on IMDB, is that Jonrosh is "a fake author who is making a live representation of his fake book."

Or something.
