Seth Coleman

aka "Seth Colman"

Created by Lewis Padgett

It may be a hard life wherever you go, but it's even harder when your wife sets you up for a fall with New York 's Westchester County cops.

That's the frame that jaded and semi-retired New York private eye SETH COLEMAN, a usually shrewd operator, finds himself in, when his thrill-seeking wife Eve, who's seen a few too many Thin Man movies, encourages him to take on a missing persons case for an imposing society dame that soon lands him in the soup, in Lewis Pagett's 1947 novel, The Brass Ring.

Lewis Padgett was the joint pseudonym of the science fiction writers (and spouses) Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore, taken from their mothers' maiden names. They also wrote as Lawrence O'Donnell and C. H. Liddell, and occasionally collaborated using their own names. Mostly together they wrote sci-fi, usually with a humorous angle. On his own, Kuttner wrote four mystery novels featuring psychoanalyst Michael Gray.

  • The back cover of the Bantam paperback edition (pictured) spells Seth's last name as "Coleman," while the inner blurb spells it as "Col man." The actual text spells it as "Colman." Go figure.

  • "Ironic, laconic, this does very well for harsher tastes".
