(The Ethical Chiang Mai Detective Agency)
Created by David Cassaret, M.D.
I'm not really sure if she even qualifies as a private eye, even by the often elastic definition of this site, but LADARUT PATALANG certainly bears investigating.
A middle-aged widow, she now lives alone with her cat, Maewfawbaah, and throws herself into her work as a working nurse in a hospital in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. She's also a member of the hospital's ethics board, and in the first book, Murder at the House of Rooster Happiness (2016), she assists a Deterctive Wiriya of the local police in his investigation of the mysterious death of a patient. To her surprise she discovers she has a knack for sleuthing, and more adventures in the "Ethical Chiang Detective Agency" are promised.
The exotic (at least to many of us) setting, coupled with the eccentric but genial characters, the quirky subplots and the genteel, empathetic tone practically beg for comparisons with with Alexander McCall Smith's Precious Ramotswe.
The author, David Cassaret, is a is a physician, researcher, and tenured associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He lives in Philadelphia.
