The Old Sleuth
Arguably the first dime novel series detective, THE OLD SLEUTH was a private eye with superhuman strength. His adventures ran from about 1872 until 1912.
Interestingly, in 1888, the owners of the "Old Sleuth" copyright tried to sue over the use of the word "sleuth," claiming they had exclusive ownership of the word. The case was thrown out of court. (cf: George Munro vs. Erastus F. Beadle and another, The Publisher's Weekly, Volume 34.)
