Marcus Novak

Created by Michael Koryta

Florida-based private investigators MARCUS "MARK" NOVAK and his wife Lauren both work for a defense firm specializing in Death Row cases -- that is, until Lauren is gunned down on a lonely Florida road.

Devasted by her murder, Marcus becomes obsessed with solving the case, and throws caution to the wind, cutting corners that shouldn't be cut -- at the risk of losing his job.

It's only on the surface that this series skims like your typical P.I. fare. But when you start to dig beneath the surface, you realize just how deep Koryta can go, whether it's his acclaimed detective fiction or his moody, supernatural thrillers. Full of deft characterization, muscular plotting and a pervasively dark and haunting atmosphere, double dips here, bringing a world of not-quite-right vibe to what's already a gripping private eye tale. The scenes in a vast cave featured in Indiana in the series debut, Last Words (2015), drip with tension and fear that show just how tight the author can grab a reader.

Koryta, now a New York Times bestselling author, first cut his teeth with the 2003 SMP/PWA Contest for Best First P.I. Novel for Tonight I Said Goodbye, which introduced gumshoe Lincoln Perry, and since then his books, which include The Prophet, Envy the Night, The Silent Hour and So Cold The River, have won or been nominated for numerous awards and honours. A former private investigator and newspaper reporter, Koryta graduated from Indiana University with a degree in criminal justice. He lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Bloomington, Indiana.
