Mac McClellan

Created by E. Michael Helms

All in all, he'd rather be fishing.

After twenty-four years in the U.S. Marines, MAC McCLELLAN is more than content to devote the rest of his life to beer, barbeque and fishing along the Florida panhandle. And maybe, just maybe, the attentions of lovely Kate Bell, a local businesswoman.

It sounds like a plan. No drama, no stress, nobody giving him orders -- just a life of good fishing, good food and drink, and good loving.

Except that Mac is something of a shit magnet. He seems to always be stumbling over something, be it a badly decomposed body, a bag of marijuana, a diamond smuggling ring or a massive real estate swindle. And, of course, murder.

By the third book in the series, Deadly Dunes (2016), he's pretty much shucked the notion of having any sort of quiet retirement, and started to work, at least part-time, as a private investigator.

Helms, a former Marine himself, is the author of an acclaimed Vietnam War memoir, The Proud Bastards. His work has also appeared in Semper Fi: Stories of U.S. Marines from Boot Camp to Battle (2003), Soldier's Heart: Survivors' Views of Combat Trauma, and Two Score and Ten: The Third Marine Division History (1992).

  • "Read this tale and soak up single malt, inhale Mac's grilled potatoes and roasted onions, learn how to make marijuana brownies (first heat the canola oil . . .), and join Mac in a really fine set piece toward the end... It's a scene reminiscent of Fleming, and it's the Mac we want to see if we meet again: a man of action, working alone."
