LIAM MULLIGAN's a real throwback in more ways than one. Not only is he that most of endangered of species -- an actual reporter working for an actual newspaper, The Providence Journal (printed on actual paper, no less!) in Providence, Rhode Island, but he's also a welcome addition to the long string of hard living, hard eyed, hard-boiled newshawks who used to be all over crime fiction; truth-seeking missiles that would follow the leads whereever they went, all in pursuit of the TRUTH.

And it helps immensely that, according to the author, a journalist himself, Rhode Island's "culture of political corruption and organized crime... stretches all the way back ot one of the first colonial governors dining with... Captain Kidd."
