Kate Garrett & Jake Carmedy

It's 2018, somewhere in Ontario, Canada, and KATE GARRETT is the daughter of Joe Garrett, a hero cop who quit the police department when he was shot and subsequently started up a detective agency, Garrett Investigations. He hired a younger man, Jake Carmedy, to do the legwork.

Kate and Jake, a handsome former military cop, don't really get along, but that doesn't bother her too much -- following in the old man's footsteps, she's joined the police force and it looks like she's going places.

And then her dad dies unexpectedly and leaves Kate half the business -- the other half belonging to Jake. That's the basic scenario of a 2010 short story, "Legacy," that served as the springboard for a novel, Deadly Legacy, which flashes forward to 2020, and features Joe's daughter, Kate Garrett, who continues the family tradition,
