"Ah, the romantic life of a private investigator" JOE GARRETT was a well-respected police officer somewhere in Ontario, Canada, when he was shot in the hip. Forced to retire, he decides to start up a detective agency, Garrett Investigations, and hires a younger man, a former military cop, Jake Carmedy, to do the legwork. That's the basic scenario of a 2010 short story, "Legacy," that served as the springboard for (and was worked into) a novel, Deadly Legacy (2012), which flashes forward to a gadget-ridden 2018, and features Joe's daughter, Kate Garrett, who has continued the family tradition, joining the police force, until her dad is murdered and leaves her half the business -- the other half belonging to Jake, a man "she has been spending years avoiding."
