"Ray-Ray! This is where he fit in!"
In his earnest 2012 debut, Portait of Murder, Milwaukee private detective JACK BLANCHARD reluctantly agrees to look for a friend's crack addict sister, Roniece, but soon finds himself tangled up in two murders, one old and one new: that of Roneice's drug dealer a couple of years earlier, and the recent murder of a City Hall bigshot, the investigation of which seems to point to the city's current mayor. Helping out our intrepid sleuth are several colourfully named cons and Juanita Velez, head of the Social Services Department.
It's all pretty standard fare, as far as plot and characterization goes, but the author manages to invest occasional bursts of style and wit into the proceedings, and the Milwaukee setting is a nice change of scenery.
The author, a former Milwaukee police officer, lives with his wife, Mary Lynne, in southeastern Wisconsin. Two more novels featuring Blanchard, have been completed.
