From the never-ending tsunami of self-publishing P.I. novels comes yet another gumshoe to add to the ranks: it's New York City's very own CHARLOTTE "CHARLIE" HANDLE, a reluctant sleuth if there ever was one. The original plan was that Charlie was going to be a scientist, but that fell through, and now she's back to her college side-job, gritting her teeth and doing the standard run-of-the-mill P.I. stuff, working out of a "plywood officce and a beat-up van."
But when an eyewitness to an upcoming trial involving corporate espionage goes missing, Charlie sucks it up and takes the case, in The Brain Loses the Game (2017), the first in a proposed series.
According to the author, Thomas Marcante, the novel's "slightly absurd, think a very slight touch of Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently." He says he writes to honor Sara Paretsky, Robert Parker, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, and his Amazon bio adds "He does not have any cats. Shame on him."
