Simon Brenner
Created by Wolf Haas (1960--)

A former Austrian police detective, sad sack private eye (and sometime chauffeur) SIMON BRENNER yearns for the simple life, but somehow murder and crime (not to mention some serious bad luck) seem to dog him wherever he goes, in this popular and award-winning series of German thrillers by Austrian-born author Wolf Haas.

Brenner's a breath of fresh air; a flawed but decent Everyman hero, instantantly recognizable and immediately likeable, who goes through life armed not with a weapon but a shrug, bolstered by a keen wit, a wry sense of humour and more than a little compassion for life's victims.

Oh, and a giant cosmic "Kick Me" sign taped to his back. Imagine if Carl Hiaasen wrote television's Monk...

The series has proven wildly successful in Europe, and three of the books have been filmed in German. As well, Haas has won several prizes for his works, including the German prize for crime fiction, the Deutscher Krimipreis, which he has won three times, and the 2004 Literature Prize from the City of Vienna.

UNDER OATH

  • "Brenner and God is one of the cleverest-- and most thoroughly enjoyable -- mysteries that I've read in a long time. Wolf Haas is the real deal, and his arrival on the American book scene is long overdue."

    Carl Hiaasen
