B.S. Flether

"Oh, I see the years haven't changed you. Well, except for the bags under your eyes and the double chin."

-- B.J. sure knows how to charm her ex (episode 1.3)

When is a television series not a television series?

When it's a web series. On one end of the scale are the slick, high and mighty productions put out by Netflix and Amazon and all the rest, zapped to millions of viewers through their high and mighty streaming networks.

And then there are the scrappy little indie shows squirted out through YouTube or even their own web sites, low budget DIY productions that run on passion, hard work, favors and friends.

B.J. FLETCHER: PRIVATE EYE (2008-12) was one of the latter, a feisty little show out of Toronto that had some surprising legs. It ran for twenty-five episodes (well, maybe snippets is a better name -- most barely topped seven minutes), and attracted a small but devoted cult following and scooped up a few pretty decent awards.

It all revolved around the professional and romantic misadventiures of BEATRIX JANE (B.J.) FLETCHER, a private investigator and her best friend and sometime assistant, Georgia (George) Drew.

And, oh, yes, they're lesbians, which makes this a sort of made-from-scratch cross between Moonlighting and The L Word.

Of course, B.J. does all the usual P.I. stuff in her own bumbling, fumbling fashion, but the show's real strength lies in the push and pull of the ever-evolving relationship between the flaky Fletcher and the more pragmatic George, a journalism student and the bartender at Milligan's, B.J.'s favourite gin joint, when the series starts. Will they? Won't they?

Sure, the acting's occasionally hit-or-miss, the production values zig and zag and they play the cute card a little too often, but there's something appealing about its earnestness and homemade feel. And I get a kick out of Fletch, the would-be novelist who can't hold her liquor, dictating bad Chandler into her over-large recorder.
