"They murdered one of the Seraphim tonight..."

Ian Tregillis' Something More Than Night (2013) isn't your usual private eye caper.

The private dick?

BAYLISS. An earthbound fallen angel who's read way too much Chandler.

The MacGuffin he's been hired to find?

The Jericho Trumpet.

The clients?

A band of rogue angels planning to bust out of Heaven, who intend to play Bayliss for a patsy if the Big Guy tumbles to their plot. But they figure it'll work -- after all, they've been working on their scheme for a billion years or so.

Yeah, I know...

But Kirkus thought enough of it to tag it one of the "Best Fiction Books of 2013."
