What becomes of the broken-hearted, you might ask? If you're QUINT McCAULEY, former head of security for a large Chicago department store, Hauser's, you pack up and head to Foxport, Illinois, a semi-rural small town "an hour and a world away" from the Big City, set up shop as a private eye, and adopt an oversized mutt named "Peanuts." At least that's the premise of the well-received Murder in Store (1989), which kicked off this series. But rest assured -- Quint's personal life pretty much remains a mess throught the series. Still, Quint's a decent enough guy. File this one under "Nice Guys, Not Quite Hard-Boiled, Not Quite Cozy." Last I heard, D.C. Brod was lviing in St. Charles, Illinois, with her husband and a cat named Travis McGee. NOVELS
