John Leslie's sixtyish, overweight and alcoholic Korean war vet turned private eye GIDEON LOWRY (his friends call him "Bud," and who can blame them?), who moonlights occasionally as apiano player, has appeared in four well-received novels so far. They're full of complex sub-plots and great characters. With the glut of South Florida sleuths, private and other wise, running full-tilt gonzo through the state, Gideon makes for nice change; a kinder, gentler, but none-the-less entertaining read. Hell, he doesn't even drink anymore....
A far harder, nastier book from Leslie was 1990's Bounty Hunter Blues, featuring Miami-based Craig Chappel...
