At times impulsive, but more often cautious Chicago private eye and suspended lawyer MALACHY "MAL" FOLEY has an ailing marriage, a legal career that just isn't going anywhere, and a reputation for playing some mean barroom piano. But he often seems like an unwilling participant in his own life, plagued by guilt and disappointment.

A complicated but appealling and all-too-human character make this a series worth watching. His debut, 1995's Fixed in His Folly garnered an 1996 Edgar nomination.

Author David J. Walker is at least as interesting as his creation. He's been a priest, working with teens in a poor Chicago parish, and an investigator, looking into charges of police brutality, and he's currently a lawyer, defending fellow attorneys who've been charged with ethics violations when he isn't writing. He's also responsible for a new series, about Kirsten and Dugan, a husband and wife team of detectives.
