Jack Steele

Created by Tom Sehler (pseud: Rex Burns)

Washington, D.C.-based U.S.M.C. official JACK STEELE had one sworn duty: to catch spies.

Unfortunately, he did his job a little too well. He blew the whistle on a congressman who had decided to sell off a few national secrets to the highest bidder. The resulting scandal aired a bit too much dirty laundry, rocked a few too many boats and suddenly Jack was persona non-grata. Jack listened to some rather pointed advice and took an early retirement.

In his early forties, with no real family ties, (having recently lost his wife to cancer and with his two daughters all grown up and off living their own lives) Jack decided to get back to where he once belonged -- namely San Diego, where he grew up. But his training stands him in good stead when an old friend of his father's asks him to look for his missing granddaughter. Soon enough the trail leads to Satanic cults, ritual sacrifices and...murder. Allegedly the first in a proposed series, but a second novel never surfaced. Too bad.

Under his own name, author Rex Burns is responsible for two other series, one featuring Denver private eye Devlin Kirk and the other starring police detective Gabe Wager. More recently, he's started a series featuring a father-and-daughter team of P.I.s, Jim and Julie Raiford.
