Let's get real dark for a change.
From the bleak industrial city of Birmingham, England comes downtrodden, booze-soaked loser private eye DEL McGINLAY.
In his debut, The City Trap, he's been recently given his walking papers by his girlfriend, and things in general aren't looking too great when a woman asks him to look into the suspicious death of her daughter. It turns out that not only was the daughter murdered, but she was a hooker, with possible ties to a local right-wing big shot.
Del's been praised for bein quite unlike "the typical private eye," but he seems pretty familiar-sounding to me, right down to the frequent bouts of self-pity (or "the big wallow" as he calls it). Words like noirish, gritty, dark, atmospheric and grim are being bandied about. Still, the books received a lot of acclaim, so you never know.
