How many whelks could a Welshman wolf?
LOUIE KNIGHT is the hapless private eye protagonist of a decidedly surreal series set in the would-be cozy tourist trap town of Aberystwyth, Wales.
Louie's a standard kinda P.I., with the standard-issue rundown kinda office, who's been known to drown his sorrows over a nice bit of ice cream or brood over his mussels at a 24-hour whelk stand.
I believe the word "romp" applies here. Reviews namedrop everyone from Voltaire and Evelyn Waugh to Raymond Chandler and Monty Python, and along the way we meet such bizarros as Sospan the philosophic ice cream man, Myfanwy Montez the sultry chanteuse star of Wales' most notorious nightclub, Lovespoon the Grand Wizard of the Druids and the good ladies of the special commando unit of the Sweet Jesus League Against Turpitude.
So far, Louie has blundered his way through two books, and it doesn't look like much -- neither famine, flood or femme fatales -- can stop him.
Louie's creator, Malcolm Pryce, was born in Shrewsbury, and grew up in Aberystwyth, but now lives in Bangkok. Following stints as a BMW assembly-line worker and, he confesses, the world's worst aluminium salesman, he worked in London in advertising for a while, before quitting his job to go travelling.
