In this retro historical P.I. novel set in the sleepy hick town of Crane Haven, circa 1948, gumshoe HAMILTON BAKER.is hired by a woman to retrieve some love letters she's sent to the local Sheriff's Deputy, Chester "Chet" Ferrebee, who's set to be married that afternoon. But when the deputy is discovered murdered and his new bride severely beaten in a motel room on his honeymoon, Baker begins to suspect his own client.
