Created by Steven J. Pipe
Quirky, unorthodox California P.I. JILL BABCOCK plies her trade in the small fictional California beach town of San Domingo. She's prone to being a smart-ass, and she doesn't care who knows it. Fortunately, she knows her stuff.
According to the author, "The character just popped into my head . . . a mid-30s private investigator... I didn't see her necessarily as being a high-powered detective, but somebody who was just getting by, scraping by, a little bit down on her luck, a rebel, who didn't fit in with her previous line of work.''
Jill made her self-published, adjective-laden debut in Squeeze (2005), that even drew praise from EQMM's Jon Breen, who praised Pipe's "smooth writing" and suggested that Pipe was "a talent to watch."
Mind you, he couldn't help but note that the promotion of the book features a blurb from Charles Ardai, the editor at Hard Case Crime who "presumably rejected it."
So far, there have been no sequels.
