CHRIS HARVEY is an L.A.-based P.I. and a real Lakers fan. He misses Kareem, Magic, Worthy and Byron Scott, but can't miss the murder of a Laker Girl during halftime of his very first "in person" Laker game. It turns out the cheerleader in question was once the college roommate of Harvey's wife of five months, Pamela Lamont. Pamela wants him to look into the death, and since the woman was dating Harvey's police academy pal, George Wong, he is quickly pulled into the case. That's how it all starts in Gerald So's P.I. fiction debut. Let's hope we haven't seen the last of Chris.

When not writing, Gerald So teaches college writing, edits fiction for the Thrilling Detective Web Site and moderates three Yahoo! Groups. UNDER OATH

• "The story was originally conceived in the mid-90s, just after Magic Johnson gave way to Nick Van Exel. Over time, I soured on the Lakers and didn't think my PI could root for the newer players, either. I tried to keep the story set in the 90s, but that yielded strange period side effects. Finally, after the story was rejected from two e-zines in one year, I was inspired to bring the story into the present. The Kobe Bryant case and the Lakers' signing Karl Malone and Gary Payton provided just the right backdrop."
