WILLIAM DOUGAL first appearred in 1982's Caroline Miniscule, which won the John Creasey Award of the Crime Writers' Association and was shortlisted for an Edgar by the Mystery Writers of America, as a British postgraduate student of history with expensive tastes and a surprisingly elastic sense of ethics.

In the ensuing seven novels, heavy on black humour and irony, he drifts into private detection, but he's the sort of detective who is as likely to commit murders as solve them. He has a moral code that's not exactly carved in granite; it's more like it's been pencilled on jello. He lies, he cheats, he steals, he betrays, and even occasionally works as a book editor...

An entertaining, offbeat series; maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but then, not everyone likes tea...
