Poke around a bit and you'll quickly spot the obvious:Stephanie Plum and Lauren Laurano, but dig a little deeper and you'll find Pam Grier in Foxy Brown (Cassandra's childhood hero), the kiss-my-ass defiace of Shaft , the sheer drop-dead fabulousness of Sex and the City , the occasionally surreal tongue-in-cheek playfullness of Shell Scott and especially the flirty, bon vivant cool of the Thin Man movies. Like Hammett's Nick Charles, Cassandra is a former detective living off a rich white girl, and like Nick, she's perfectly fine with it. And still finds time to get more than a little messed up in the occasional murder investigation. After all, just because her significant other Laura (rhymes with Nora), had a father who left her a multi-million dollar clam conglomerate (insert seafood jokes here) doesn't mean they can't have fun, right? And for Cassandra and Laura, that includes plenty of martinis, gorgeous clothes, some pretty clever mysteries to solve and a fair amount of good-natured banter (and some equally good-natured romps in the sack). What can I say? These girls just want to have fun. NOVELS
